Artist's Biography

Balboa Del Sol Donald D. Knapp, mixed media artist, born in 1943, is a native of San Diego, California. Don has been creating art for as long as he can remember. Pulling his shiny red Radio Flyer wagon, a five year old Don would sell his paintings door to door on the streets of La Mesa, California. The neighborhood embraced the young man’s entrepreneurialism.  Even the local officers of the San Diego County’s Sheriffs Department knew of Don’s endeavors and, from time to time, would make a purchase.

Strongly influenced at a young age to pursue a career in art by his highly artistic family, it was, indeed, in these formative years that Don’s passion for painting blossomed and he began to develop his unique style. To this day, the ebb and flow of life provide him with enriching inspiration to fuel his efforts to continuously create new works of art. He can frequently be seen creating his paintings at his studio in Spanish Village Art Center in beautiful Balboa Park, Studio 3.

Mostly self-taught, Don uses a mixture of mediums to achieve his artistic effects. Acrylic paints and colored pencils are featured predominantly in many of his works, applied with a variety of paint brushes and very often with his bare fingers.

"Color State Flower" - Don D. Knapp Don enjoys working with unconventional ideas and mediums. He has a skill for creating vibrant color combinations which compete for attention, yet still manage to exist harmoniously on the paper.

While living in Reno, Nevada he grew to love the dramatic color palettes of Native American Indian art of the Southwest, as well as the spiritual aspect of the art of Mexico. This influence shines through much of his work. Don's approach to his work has a special quality that reflects a creative spirit and seems to truly communicate with his many viewers.

During his long and prolific art career, Don has
participated in upwards of a thousand major art exhibitions and shows. His exemplary work has achieved numerous awards and is currently in private collections across the globe. "Desert Pardise"- Don D. Knapp
